I’m starting to see a lot of people making New Years resolutions, vowing to start meditating. Feeling lost on the subject? Let this be a quick starting point to get you going on your meditation journey. Many are well aware of the benefits that meditation brings when it comes to strengthening the mind and body. Some have even attempted to practice it, but, after many failed attempts at quieting their thoughts in hopes of finding peace, they ultimately decided to give up. The problem is that most beginners don’t have the right mindset when they start with meditation; reaching for someone else’s definition of it can be detrimental to your personal success with the practice. This is why you may be having trouble following through with it, in spite of the benefits.

This article will go over 20 tips that can help any beginner overcome the initial challenges many experience with meditation so that you can get started with making it a part of your daily practice, ASAP.

Keep in mind these are just some general tips meant to help you get started meditating if you’re not sure where to begin. I personally believe that meditation should fit your lifestyle and personality. Maybe for you meditation is sitting in a hot bath, painting, or sunbathing on the beach. Make sure that when you’re ready you take the time to tailor this practice to whatever works best for YOU.

8 Easy Ways to Practice Self-Love

So, who/what is the most important person/thing in your life? A lot of people will automatically list their significant other, boss, or their job as their top priority – along with earning money, supporting their family, and having something (hopefully fulfilling) to occupy themselves with.

I’ve noticed that for many of us the most important person in our lives happens to be someone outside of us. It’s usually a person we’re trying to please, which leads us to completely forego the most important relationship any of us will ever have, the one we have with ourselves.

Today, I want to focus on self-love. A love that recognizes that making the decision to look after and love ourselves means to take responsibility for our own health, happiness, and to take responsibility for all of our actions. When we do this everyone in our lives, those who truly love us and understand us, will not only benefit, but may also be driven to do the same for themselves. Here are some tips to help you rev up the self-love in your life.

– This is a beautiful / inspirational story of triumph based on a moment in time lived by one of my older cousins who created success after finding herself between a rock and a hard place.

In her podcast, Becoming the Lender, Fran (@fransmoore on instagram) tells the story of her beginnings as a young college graduate with a pretty good job, a strong sense of individuality, and more money than she’d ever had before. She explains how moving away from home and “ballin’ out in buckhead”, as she explains it,  pushed her into a beautiful rush of life that many long to experience so soon after graduation. There were nights filled with fun, closets stacked with the latest fits, and an apartment in one of the hottest locations in town. Little did she know that all of the seemingly small decisions that she would make during those times would add up – and not positively. All at once she watched helplessly as everything she had once enjoyed snowballed into a force of consequences that lead her unexpectedly on a path of self-growth and discovery.

The Unrealistic Beauty Standards Of Society

LIFE

Let’s touch on a subject that has plagued us all since the beginning of forever – the world’s obsession with perfection, and the pressure to succumb to it. How many of us have run ourselves into the ground, or completely refrained from doing something we really wanted to do because of perfection, body image issues, and the fear of “not doing it right the first time”? Please don’t be afraid or ashamed if you nodded your head because I promise you that you aren’t the only one; in fact, I’m nodding my head right along with you as I type this.

Everywhere we go the idea of perfection is reinforced with images of what society claims it to be – and I’m not just talking about physical appearances here. I’m talking perfect career, family, body, house, car, children – LIFE (*cough* see instagram *cough*). This causes us to believe that we need to be different from who we actually are in order to be accepted by others and in most cases it really, really sucks. The truth is, under all the images we see and the beauty standards that have influenced our world we’re all already perfect and we didn’t assume we weren’t until society told us so.

Girl Groups: A Word from the Nineties

There was a depth, beauty and strength to 90s girl groups that led them right into my little pubescent heart. I’m in my 20s now and I hold on to them even tighter than I did back then – mostly because I actually know what they’re talking about now. Destiny’s Child, TLC, The Spice Girls and others arrived at a time when I believe the world was more than ready for them, specifically young women and girls. They waltzed right on in with their matching outfits, catchy empowering lyrics, and fire personalities. Each group influenced fashion and created trends that are still extremely popular today. Their images of solidarity and support were beautiful for me to see – even if otherwise was going on behind the scenes. They carried confidence and fearlessness with them, they knew of their voices, and were not afraid to use them to their fullest potential. Most importantly, they each held an influential energy that lasted way beyond what they may have expected.
